There's no denying that the Audi A4 Allroad will cost you more than the standard Audi A4 Avant to run. All cars come with four-wheel drive, which has a negative impact on fuel economy, and only large, powerful engines are available. This is in order to make the car fit for towing duties and climbing steep hills and tracks. The Allroad isn't as thirsty as more traditional 4x4s though.
On the downside, Audis are more expensive than similar cars from less upmarket manufacturers, while servicing and insurance are more costly, too.
Audi A4 Allroad MPG & CO2
There are three engines to choose from when buying an A4 Allroad. Two of them are diesel and both are more economical than the petrol option. Only the 2.0-litre TDI is available with a manual gearbox and it returns 48.7mpg and emits 153g/km of CO2 in this form, making it the most efficient model in the Allroad range. The emissions put the car into tax band G for an annual bill of £180. The same engine hooked up to Audi's 7-speed S tronic gearbox is slightly less efficient.
The bigger, more powerful 3.0-litre TDI is only available with the seven-speed S tronic automatic gearbox and returns 45.6mpg with CO2 emissions of 161g/km, making it no more expensive to tax then the smaller diesel engine. However, it costs an extra £4,000 to buy.
More reviews
The A4 Allroad's 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine paired with the S tronic automatic gearbox is the least efficient engine on offer, returning 39.8mpg while emitting 164g/km of CO2. This means that whichever A4 Allroad model you choose, you'll pay £180 a year in road tax.
If you consider the cost of petrol against diesel per litre and the fact that there isn't a huge discrepancy between the mpg figures of the diesel and petrol models, the petrol could be only marginally more expensive to run than the diesels.
Insurance groups
The 2.0-litre diesel model of the A4 Allroad falls into group 26, while the petrol version is rated in group 30. The most powerful model, the 3.0-litre TDI diesel, is in group 32.
Servicing
The Audi A4 Allroad needs a minor service after 10,000 miles and a major service after 20,000 miles. This costs £160 and £310 respectively (or £190 and £375 for the 3.0-litre diesel model). Audi also offers fixed prices for wear-and-tear items and regular maintenance work – including a cambelt change for £450 and a gearbox oil change for £170.
Warranty
Audi offers a three-year/60,000-mile warranty on its new cars. This is fairly standard for the industry, although some manufacturers (like BMW) offer the same time period with unlimited mileage and others (like Hyundai and Kia) offer five and seven-year warranties.
